First Sundance 2017 Acquisition: Netflix Takes Doc 'Casting JonBenet'

Kitty Green directed the documentary, which will debut on the streamer in the spring.

The first Sundance acquisition of 2017 goes to Netflix.

The streamer has acquired worldwide rights to Kitty Green's documentary Casting JonBenet, which will have its world premiere in the Documentary Competition of the Park City, Utah-based fest.

Casting JonBenet centers on the sensationalized murder case and the still-unsolved death of 6-year-old American beauty queen JonBenet Ramsey. Filmmakers traveled to Ramsey's Colorado hometown to ask residents to reflect on their personal experiences with the trial and the strange mythology that continues to surround the tragedy.

Green also produced the doc, along with Scott Macaulay and James Schamus. Meridian Entertainment financed the feature through its production pact with Schamus' Symbolic Exchange.

Screen Australia, Film Victoria, the Sundance Institute Documentary Film Program, Cinereach, Rooftop Films and Garbo NYC provided additional financing for the doc.

Casting JonBenet will launch on Netflix and in limited theatrical release in the spring.

Ramsey's unsolved murder has sparked multiple true-crime offerings as of late.

CBS aired six-part docuseries The Case of: JonBenet Ramsey, pegged to the 20th anniversary of the trial, while A&E had a two-hour documentary special, The Killing of JonBenet: The Truth Uncovered. Additionally, in November, Lifetime aired a TV movie titled Who Killed JonBenet?that starred Eion Bailey as the detective who originally investigated the case.
